Vladimir Žerjavić and Vladeta Jerotić honored on August 2

On August 2, two prominent scholars from the former Yugoslavia are commemorated. Vladimir Žerjavić (1912‑1998), a Croatian economist and United Nations development expert, is remembered for his statistical analysis of World War II casualties, estimating about 1.027 million deaths in Yugoslavia—significantly lower than the long‑cited figure of 1.7 million. His work reshaped demographic research on the war’s human cost.

Vladeta Jerotić (1924‑2014), a Serbian psychiatrist, professor and academician, is celebrated for integrating modern neuropsychiatry with Orthodox spiritual tradition. After training in Switzerland, Germany and France, he led a psychotherapeutic department in Belgrade and taught at the Faculty of Theology, publishing influential works that bridged medicine, psychology and faith.
