Vladimir Guerrero Jr. declines All-Star Game to rest for second half

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the Toronto Blue Jays’ first‑base star, was voted the American League’s starting first baseman for the 2026 All‑Star Game in Philadelphia. He announced he will not attend, saying he needs to use the break to recover from ongoing lower‑back issues and prepare for the second half of the season.

Guerrero, who is batting .265 with four home runs and 35 RBIs after 84 games, explained, “Before I take a decision like this, I always talk to my family… I’ve been having a little bit of issues with my lower back. That comes first, for me to get ready, to prepare myself for my team to have a strong second half.” Manager John Schneider called the move “a sign of growing up,” emphasizing the player’s maturity and the importance of health for the franchise. The Blue Jays will be represented at the All‑Star Game by Ernie Clement, Dylan Cease and Louis Varland, while other Canadian‑linked players such as Freddie Freeman will also appear.
