Vladimir Putin cites election results to justify Ukraine escalation

Following the parliamentary elections in Russia, Vladimir Putin has indicated that the results provide a mandate to continue the military operation in Ukraine. Analysts suggest the victory of the United Russia party, achieved through various administrative mechanisms and the exclusion of anti-war opposition, serves to bolster domestic legitimacy for the Kremlin’s ongoing policies.

Regarding peace negotiations, Putin stated that while all proposals for settling the conflict remain on the table, Moscow must carefully evaluate its interests. He accused Ukraine of provocative attacks against Moscow and polling stations, characterizing these actions as ‘child's play’ and warning that Ukraine will face significant retaliatory strikes. He noted that while Moscow was prepared to resume talks following the elections, recent Ukrainian actions have complicated the situation.
