Vladimir Putin may test NATO and new UK PM Andy Burnham, British intelligence warns
British intelligence services say Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing a direct confrontation with NATO within the next two months. The Kremlin is believed to view the recent change in the United Kingdom’s government – with Andy Burnham succeeding Keir Starmer as prime minister – as an opportunity to test Western resolve.
The warning cites several factors: U.S. President Donald Trump’s focus on Iran, perceived divisions within Ukrainian leadership, and frustration over the war in Ukraine. It also notes that Russia’s so‑called “shadow fleet” has been rerouted away from the English Channel to waters north of the Shetland Islands, prompting expanded Royal Navy surveillance.
On the day Burnham took office, a Russian frigate conducted live‑fire artillery drills about 46 miles (roughly 74 km) south of Plymouth. In parallel, Tehran has declared UK military bases legitimate targets because Britain supports U.S. operations, and British intelligence has launched a major secret operation to protect RAF Fairford from possible attacks.
