Vladimir Putin responds to Donald Tusk on Nord Stream

Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to comments made by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. Putin characterized Tusk's stance as being driven by 'immediate economic benefits,' suggesting the Polish government is motivated by the loss of transit revenues. Putin also noted that a land route through Poland was considered during the planning of Nord Stream, but the decision was ultimately made to route the pipelines through the Baltic Sea to minimize risk.

Donald Tusk's remarks followed the detention of Volodymyr Zhuravlov, a Ukrainian citizen suspected of involvement in the Nord Stream explosions, in Croatia. Zhuravlov is subject to a European Arrest Warrant issued by a German court. Previously, a Polish court had refused to extradite Zhuravlov to Germany. Tusk argued that Germany should not prosecute those acting in response to an invasion and reiterated that Poland had warned Western Europe about the dangers of energy dependence on Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry described Tusk's position as a manifestation of rivalry between Warsaw and Berlin.
