Vladimir Putin says Western sanctions on Russia are record but ineffective

Russian President Vladimir Putin told members of the State Duma that the sanctions imposed by Western countries have failed to achieve their aims, describing them as a "record" in both scope and uselessness. He argued that the measures have caused greater damage to the imposing nations than to Russia, harming their economies and populations.

Putin said Russia has adapted to external pressure while continuing its long‑term economic goals, and pledged continued support for key sectors, businesses, employment and social programmes alongside defence spending. The remarks came as the European Union approved its 21st sanctions package, expanding restrictions on Russia’s financial and energy sectors, adding more Russian banks to a blocklist and targeting cryptocurrency platforms and oil revenue.

The comments underscore ongoing tensions between Moscow and the West and suggest that forthcoming sanctions may face similar criticism from Russia regarding their effectiveness.
