Russia conducts Center-2026 strategic military exercises

Russian President Vladimir Putin observed the Center-2026 strategic command-and-staff exercise at the Chebarkulsky training ground in the Chelyabinsk region. The maneuvers, which run from September 28 to October 3, involve more than 47,000 servicemen operating across 11 training grounds and the Caspian Sea.

The exercise utilizes approximately 2,000 weapons and military vehicles, 90 aircraft and helicopters, and 77 warships and support vessels. Military contingents from Belarus, China, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Tajikistan are participating. The drills are being conducted alongside the Collective Security Treaty Organization’s (CSTO) Interaction-2026 exercise.

Putin stated that the primary objective is to improve the leadership and staff skills required to control troops when repelling external aggression. He noted that the military scenarios were developed using experience gained from the special military operation in Ukraine and that troops are testing new weapons and equipment. Delegations from 55 foreign countries were present to observe the proceedings.
