Vladimir Putin warns of global instability at Valdai Club
At the Valdai Discussion Club, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed a global landscape he described as being at a decisive turning point. He argued that the world is transitioning toward a multipolar order, asserting that Western hegemony is declining and that international institutions established after 1945 are no longer adequate for the 21st century.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Putin claimed that Russia did not initiate the war but was forced to respond to aggression after being pushed to a 'red line.' He characterized the current situation as an acute conflict and suggested that the West's support for Ukrainian nationalism and NATO's presence in historically Russian territories contributed to the escalation. He further stated that the current geopolitical instability traces its roots back to the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
Putin also issued warnings regarding nuclear security, noting that there are no guarantees that nuclear powers will not resort to such weapons. He emphasized that a direct attack on Russian territory, including Kaliningrad, would trigger a response involving all available types of weaponry. He concluded by calling for a new global agreement between the East and West, North and South, to establish principles for a stable and prosperous future.
