Vladimir Putin warns of maritime retaliation during Pacific Fleet visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in the Sakhalin region to inspect the final stages of a major Pacific Fleet exercise. During the visit, Putin toured the cruiser Varyag, the fleet's flagship, where he received a briefing from Admiral Viktor Liina and signed the ship's log.

In a speech to sailors, Putin issued a warning to Western nations regarding the seizure of Russian-linked commercial vessels. He characterized such actions as “piracy and robbery” and a violation of international maritime law. Putin stated that if such actions occur, Moscow will be forced to retaliate, noting that such responses are not limited to the waters where the seizures take place but could occur in any region deemed appropriate, including the Pacific.

The ongoing naval exercises, which began on August 4, involve approximately 60 vessels—including submarines and support ships—along with 30 aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. More than 13,000 personnel are participating in the drills, which cover areas including the Sea of Okhotsk and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. While emphasizing national security, Putin also noted Russia's readiness for mutually acceptable compromises with neighbors and partners based on respect for mutual interests.
