European Union and Canada explore long-term LNG import partnership
The European Union and Canada are considering a long-term partnership for the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to bolster European energy security. This initiative, outlined in a draft joint statement for the upcoming EU-Canada summit in Montreal, aims to diversify energy sources and reduce strategic vulnerability amid high gas prices and record-low reserves in Europe.
Both parties plan to commission a feasibility study regarding LNG exports and intend to strengthen cooperation in electrical grid development, battery energy storage, and the protection of energy infrastructure. While the United States has become the EU’s largest LNG supplier following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU continues to seek additional stability due to supply disruptions from Qatar and the ongoing transition away from Russian energy.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed support for expanding LNG export capacities. He indicated a willingness to support exports from New Brunswick, provided that the ban on hydraulic fracturing is lifted to enable domestic production. However, environmental organizations have cautioned that new terminals and pipelines could prolong dependence on fossil fuels and delay investments in renewable energy.
