Vladimír Růžička enters Chomutov municipal politics

Hockey legend Vladimír Růžička, an Olympic gold medalist and former national team coach, has announced his candidacy for the municipal elections in Chomutov. He is running on a joint candidate list titled 'Chomutov sobě', which includes the SPD, Motorists, and PRO parties.

Růžička will be joined on the ticket by Martin Pešout, a former colleague from Slavia and recent coach of the Piráti Chomutov. Růžička’s campaign uses the slogan 'Nejsme politici, makáme' (We are not politicians, we work).

This political move follows a previous unsuccessful attempt in the 2024 European Parliament elections, where Růžička received 397 votes running for the PRO party. His public profile has been previously impacted by a 2017 bribery conviction related to his time at Slavia Prague. Additionally, it has been noted that Růžička currently resides in Karlovy Vary rather than Chomutov.
