Vélez-Blanco Castle archaeological study reveals historical evolution
An archaeological study of the Vélez-Blanco Castle in Almería has provided new insights into the structure's evolution. Researchers Carmen Mellado Sáez and Rocío Ramos Gómez utilized architectural archaeology, including stratigraphic analysis and photogrammetry, to reconstruct the history of the fortified palace.
The findings indicate that the current castle-palace was constructed in the early 16th century atop the remains of an ancient Islamic alcazaba. The study reveals a building designed as a fortress externally but featuring a palatial interior, including an Italian-inspired porticoed gallery. The research, conducted between October and December 2022, supports ongoing restoration efforts to prepare the site for public visitation.
