Vélez-Málaga care home elevator collapse kills two

Two elderly residents have died following an elevator collapse at the Seniors care home in Vélez-Málaga, Spain. The accident occurred on Wednesday evening when the lift plummeted from the second floor to the basement with six people inside.

The deceased have been identified as an 82-year-old woman and a 91-year-old man. Four other residents, aged between 68 and 86, were injured and transported to the Hospital de la Axarquía. While some victims were initially in intensive care, reports indicate that two of the injured have since been moved to general wards.

The National Police are investigating the cause of the incident, with mechanical failure or wear-and-tear being considered as potential hypotheses. The management of the Seniors residence stated that the elevator had passed its last inspection and that the facility's lift system had been fully renovated in 2023. The family of one victim has raised concerns regarding potential negligence, alleging that staff members had previously avoided using the lifts.
