Vélez Sarsfield protests Boca Juniors over foreign player limit
Vélez Sarsfield has filed a formal protest with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) regarding Boca Juniors' participation in the Copa Argentina. The club alleges that Boca fielded six foreign players in their match, violating the regulation that permits a maximum of five foreign players on the official match sheet.
Vélez officials, including President Fabián Berlanga and Vice President Nelson Pugliese, argue that the inclusion of a sixth foreign player—specifically Ángel Romero, who remained on the bench—constitutes an improper lineup. They are seeking a ruling that would award Vélez a 3-0 victory and advancement to the quarterfinals.
Boca Juniors maintains that no sporting advantage was gained since Romero did not enter the field of play. However, Vélez contends that being available to the coaching staff constitutes participation under the disciplinary code. The AFA Disciplinary Tribunal is expected to issue a ruling on September 17.
