Vlissingen resident observes rare circumzenithal arc
A rare meteorological phenomenon, known scientifically as a circumzenithal arc, was observed in the sky over Vlissingen. Often referred to as an ‘upside-down rainbow’, the colorful arc appeared for approximately forty-five minutes.
According to meteorologist Jules Geirnaerdt, the phenomenon is caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high veil clouds, rather than through raindrops as seen in a standard rainbow. While these arcs can occur during the afternoons of May, June, and July, the specific occurrence was noted by a local resident who captured photographs of the event.
