VLS restores natural water regimes in Brd highlands

Vojenské lesy a statky ČR (VLS) has completed two new projects in the Brd region aimed at restoring the natural water regime of the landscape. The revitalization efforts in the Trokavec and U Pěti zlodějů locations are designed to slow water runoff from forests, restore natural watercourses and wetlands, and improve conditions for forest growth.

In the Trokavec area within the Plzeň Region, work focused on restoring a natural network of small watercourses, blocking drainage ditches, and modifying forest roads to prevent rapid water runoff. These measures affect approximately 300 hectares of forest. In the U Pěti zlodějů location, VLS restored the natural regime of the Obecnický stream tributaries, affecting roughly 151 hectares.

These projects follow a 2023 water retention study that mapped the 22,600-hectare Brd highlands and identified 25 priority locations for restoration. This follows an earlier project at the Voložný stream source, where over 3.2 kilometers of watercourses and channels were modified.
