Vltava river historical engineering projects near Čertova stěna

Historical engineering attempts to modify the Vltava river near Čertova stěna were never realized, preserving the area's natural beauty. Around 1530, pond builder Štěpánek Netolický proposed removing approximately 300 large boulders and constructing a wooden channel to facilitate timber rafting from Šumava, but the project was deemed too costly.

In the 18th century, engineer Josef Rosenauer, creator of the Schwarzenberg Canal, proposed two alternative solutions to bypass the rock formation. One plan involved a seven-kilometer paved channel within the natural riverbed, while the second suggested excavating a channel upstream, following a route similar to the modern Vltava cycle path. Both designs remained unexecuted.

In contemporary contexts, political decisions continue to shape the accessibility of such natural sites through funding for public transport, cycling infrastructure, and parking facilities. Additionally, the National Heritage Institute has announced free guided tours of selected monuments on August 30 and September 27, 2026.
