VMRO-DPMNE accuses SDSM of opposing data center investments
The political party VMRO-DPMNE has accused SDSM leader Venko Filipce of attempting to obstruct the development of data centers in North Macedonia through political spin and unjustified public concern.
VMRO-DPMNE claims that Filipce is creating unnecessary anxiety regarding electricity costs and water resource usage for cooling purposes, despite explanations that energy can be sourced from renewables and various cooling solutions exist. The ruling party argues that the data center industry is vital for attracting investment, creating jobs, and fostering economic progress.
The dispute has also caused internal friction within the SDSM. Former Prime Minister and current MP Dimitar Kovachevski has publicly stated that he does not share Filipce’s stance, supporting the industry's potential benefits for the state. Additionally, there are allegations that efforts to influence public opinion against these centers include involvement from foreign profiles, potentially impacting strategic relations with the United States.
