Ratko Mladić death sparks political controversy in the Balkans FAST-MOVING
The death of Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska convicted of genocide and war crimes, has triggered significant political controversy in the Balkans.
The European Commission issued a stern warning following statements by politicians in Montenegro that appeared to honor Mladić, stating that the glorification of convicted war criminals has “no place in the European Union or in candidate countries.”
In North Macedonia, political tensions have escalated after Ivan Stoilković, a minister in the government, and the Democratic Party of Serbs expressed respect for Mladić. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) have demanded accountability, calling for the government to distance itself from such rhetoric. They argue that glorifying a person convicted of genocide contradicts European values and the country's path toward EU integration. Meanwhile, Serbian Minister Ivica Dačić criticized the Hague Tribunal, claiming it showed an “anti-civilizational face” regarding the treatment of Mladić and Slobodan Milošević.
