Vocal cord health: Persistent hoarseness requires medical checkup
Medical experts warn that persistent hoarseness following a cold or respiratory illness may indicate underlying vocal cord issues rather than simple temporary irritation. While most voice changes caused by coughing resolve with vocal rest, prolonged symptoms require medical attention.
Professor Jung Su-yeon of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital notes that frequent coughing causes repeated irritation and inflammation of the vocal cord mucosa. If voice changes persist for more than two to three weeks, individuals should undergo a laryngoscopy to check the condition and movement of the vocal cords.
Failure to address long-term voice changes can lead to muscle tension dysphonia, caused by overcompensating with neck muscles, or structural issues such as early-stage vocal cord nodules. To manage throat health, experts recommend avoiding loud talking, minimizing throat clearing, and maintaining hydration to prevent vocal cord dryness.
