Vodacom, AWS and University of Johannesburg launch AI talent pipeline in South Africa

Vodacom Group has partnered with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create a joint AI initiative aimed at building a sustainable pipeline of AI and data‑science talent in South Africa. The collaboration, delivered through UJ’s Centre for Applied Data Science, will provide postgraduate students with co‑designed learning programmes, industry mentorship and access to AWS cloud tools such as Amazon Bedrock. Early projects focus on autonomous AI systems for telecom cyber‑threat detection and blockchain solutions for digital identity management.

The partners have launched the Vodacom AI Lab, where students work on real‑world telecommunications challenges such as network optimisation, customer‑service improvement and data‑driven decision‑making. Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub and UJ Executive Dean Professor Tankiso Moloi highlighted the ambition to develop job‑ready AI professionals who can drive business innovation and support Africa’s digital future.
