Vodacom invests R1.6bn in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal network expansion
Vodacom is investing a total of R1.6 billion in network infrastructure across the South African provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal for the 2027 financial year. The investment aims to expand coverage, increase network capacity, and improve resilience against power disruptions and severe weather.
In Mpumalanga, the company is allocating over R600 million to expand broadband connectivity, specifically targeting underserved rural areas, townships, and all 17 local municipalities. This follows a R620 million investment in the 2025/26 period. Vodacom has already increased its mobile infrastructure footprint in the province from 1,300 to 1,408 sites and is working to increase the proportion of fibre-connected sites to 45%.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Vodacom is committing R1 billion, building on R1.1 billion spent in the previous financial year. Approximately R419 million of this will fund radio network expansion and modernisation, including LTE and 5G upgrades. An additional R173 million will be directed toward transmission infrastructure, such as fibre and microwave upgrades, to support growing broadband demand.
