Vodacom invests R500 million in Western Cape network expansion
Vodacom is investing more than R500 million in network infrastructure across the Western Cape during the current financial year to promote digital inclusion. The capital expenditure aims to expand network coverage, modernize existing systems, and improve energy resilience, specifically targeting deep rural communities and township areas.
Approximately R380 million of the budget is dedicated to Radio Access Network (RAN) modernization. This includes upgrading or replacing more than 50 sites with next-generation cellular infrastructure to support advanced 5G capabilities, improve energy efficiency, and increase network capacity. Additionally, over 50 sites will receive 4G capacity upgrades using the 700MHz spectrum to enhance building penetration and coverage in both urban and underserved areas.
The rollout will focus on key towns and communities, including Khayelitsha, Delft, Gugulethu, Langa, Mitchells Plain, and Philippi. The remaining funds will support energy resilience projects designed to maintain connectivity during power disruptions.
