Vodafone survey: Smartphone use viewed as rude in social settings

A survey conducted by the research institute Civey on behalf of Vodafone reveals significant social friction regarding smartphone usage in Germany. Among approximately 2,500 respondents, 71 percent consider it rude when a companion uses a phone during personal conversations, marking it as the most significant social taboo.

Other social settings also show high levels of disapproval. About 63 percent of participants find smartphone use during shared meals to be impolite, while 40 percent view it negatively during a first date. In cultural settings like the cinema or theater, 34 percent consider it rude.

Conversely, smartphone use appears more socially acceptable in professional and private environments. Only 21 percent of respondents find checking messages or emails during meetings or at the workplace to be impolite, a figure that matches the sentiment regarding phone use in bed with a partner. In sports stadiums, only 2 percent of people find nearby phone usage or photography bothersome.
