voestalpine secures raw material supply via rail logistics
The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG), voestalpine, and the Slovenian freight company SŽ-Tovorni promet are collaborating to secure the raw material supply for voestalpine steel production sites in Linz and Donawitz, Austria.
In 2025, approximately 3.1 million tons of raw materials, including iron ore, metallurgical coal, and hot briquetted iron (HBI), were transported via the Adriatic port of Koper to these facilities. RCG transports a total of about 8.5 million tons of raw materials for voestalpine annually to meet a daily requirement of roughly 40,000 tons.
To maintain supply security despite ongoing construction and capacity constraints on rail lines between Koper and Austria, the partners are implementing strategic measures. These include the use of interoperable locomotives to reduce transit times at the Jesenice border station from two hours to a maximum of 30 minutes, and the development of alternative routes through the Spielfeld-Straß border station to mitigate delays caused by modernization works scheduled through September 2027.
