Voice AI faces hurdles in reaching conversational breakthrough

Voice artificial intelligence has seen significant investment and deployment in corporate sectors like hospitality, healthcare, and telecommunications, yet industry experts suggest it has not yet reached a “ChatGPT moment.” While full-duplex models capable of simultaneous listening and speaking now exist, challenges remain regarding reasoning speed and natural conversational flow.

In call center environments, voice AI is already managing millions of monthly calls for tasks such as bookings and order inquiries. However, current automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems frequently struggle with critical details. While these systems handle predictable scripts well, they often fail to accurately transcribe or recognize specific, high-stakes information such as unusual medication names, alphanumeric product codes, or requests that fall outside of standard protocols.

To achieve higher levels of automation, leaders from PolyAI and Otter.ai indicate that the technology must improve its ability to identify speakers, capture intent, and integrate organizational knowledge. The goal is to move beyond robotic interactions toward agents that build enough trust through accuracy and speed to resolve complex problems without human intervention.
