Vojislav Perišić warns against using baking soda for stomach acid
Gastroenterologist Professor Vojislav Perišić has issued a warning against using baking soda as a self-administered remedy for stomach acid issues. While baking soda may temporarily neutralize acid, Perišić notes that its effects are short-lived and do not address the underlying cause of the discomfort.
Instead of relying on baking soda or carbonated water, which may exacerbate symptoms, the specialist recommends dietary adjustments and herbal teas. For 'silent acid' issues where heartburn is not prominent, he suggests drinking St. John's Wort tea before breakfast to coat the stomach lining, and mint tea after breakfast or throughout the day.
Dietary recommendations include consuming five small, low-fat meals daily. Suggested foods include light carbohydrates such as mashed potatoes, mashed carrots, apple puree, bananas, and boiled chicken. Perišić emphasizes that if symptoms persist, recur frequently, or are accompanied by weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or changes in stool color, individuals must seek professional medical consultation rather than relying on home remedies.
