Volaris and Aeroméxico suspend flights to Tulum airport

Major Mexican airlines Volaris and Aeroméxico have announced the suspension of operations at Tulum International Airport, signaling a deepening crisis in the region's tourism sector.

Aeroméxico suspended its services effective September 30, 2026, citing market conditions and the need to optimize its route network. Volaris will follow with a suspension starting January 7, 2027, citing low route profitability, low occupancy rates, and rising operational costs. These costs include increased fuel prices, air navigation services, and Airport Use Fees (TUA).

Data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency indicates a significant decline in passenger traffic at the Tulum terminal, which saw a 33.2 percent decrease in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. This downturn coincides with broader trends in the Mexican Caribbean, where hotel occupancy rates have dropped, in some areas to below 50 percent, and major destinations like Cancún have also reported decreases in passenger arrivals.
