Volcanic activity reported at Ol Doinyo Lengai and El Reventador
Geoscientists have identified magma movement beneath the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in northern Tanzania. Using GNSS station data, researchers determined that a ground uplift recorded between March 2022 and August 2023 was best explained by a shallow, horizontal magma intrusion approximately 3.1 kilometers below the crater, involving a volume change of nearly 0.99 million cubic meters.
In Ecuador, the El Reventador volcano continues to exhibit high levels of surface activity. Reports from the Instituto Geofísico indicate that the volcano experienced 69 explosions and over 130 seismic events within a 24-hour period ending September 20. Observations included ash clouds reaching heights of 800 meters and incandescent material descending the flanks up to 1,100 meters below the crater level. While no heavy rain has triggered mudflows, authorities warned that significant rainfall could mobilize accumulated debris toward nearby rivers.
