Volcanic landscapes feature unique lakes in Vietnam and Dominica

Unique geological formations are drawing attention in both Vietnam and the Caribbean. On Lý Sơn Island in Quảng Ngãi, Vietnam, Thới Lới Mountain features a rare freshwater lake located within a dormant volcanic crater. This lake, formed by a reservoir built in 2012, provides a stable freshwater source amidst the ocean. The island's volcanic origins also created fertile basalt soil, supporting local garlic production. Tourism in the Quảng Ngãi province has seen significant growth, with revenues increasing by 56% in the first half of 2026.

In Dominica, the Boiling Lake represents a different geothermal phenomenon. Located within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, it is the world's second-largest boiling lake. Geologists describe it as a flooded fumarole where rainwater collects over a geothermal vent, causing the water to bubble and steam intensely. Temperatures near the lake range from 82–92°C. Researchers noted a significant drop in water levels in early 2024, highlighting the dynamic nature of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
