Volcanic materials provide geological history and health risks
Volcanologists use volcanic materials such as lava, scoria, pumice, and ash to reconstruct the eruptive history of volcanoes. By analyzing these geological archives, researchers can determine the scale, type, and frequency of past eruptions to develop future hazard scenarios. Dini Nurfiani, a researcher at the Geological Disaster Research Center of BRIN, noted that studying past geological records provides critical information that current activity monitoring alone cannot offer. For example, rock deposits in the Bandung Tahura Forest area serve as evidence of past massive eruptions from Mount Sunda.
Beyond geological study, volcanic eruptions pose significant health risks due to the release of fine particles and corrosive gases like sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride. Exposure can lead to acute respiratory issues, skin irritation, and eye problems. To mitigate these health impacts, experts recommend maintaining a strong immune system through specific nutrients. Recommended intake includes Vitamin C and Vitamin A to support epithelial tissue and immune cells, as well as natural substances like garlic, green tea, and andrographis for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
