Volcanic misinformation research identifies common myths and risks

An international research team has identified how misinformation regarding volcanic eruptions spreads through media and social platforms, potentially endangering public safety. By analyzing 375 media articles published between 2017 and 2022, researchers catalogued 18 common misconceptions.

These inaccuracies range from fundamental scientific errors, such as misidentifying volcanic ash as smoke, to exaggerated claims involving “supervolcanoes,” “mega-tsunamis,” and the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The study highlights that such misinformation can distort risk perception, leading to dangerous real-world consequences like the refusal of evacuation orders or unnecessary panic.

The research aims to assist journalists in communicating volcanic hazards more accurately and to help the public recognize misleading information during active eruptions.
