Volkswagen and BYD engage in China EV price war

A competitive price war is intensifying in the Chinese electric vehicle market, driven by aggressive pricing from both domestic manufacturer BYD and the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture.

SAIC Volkswagen has opened preorders for the ID. Era 5S saloon, with an introductory price of approximately $17,175 (115,900 yuan). The vehicle features a 19.1kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a 130kW electric motor. Despite its low cost, the model includes premium features such as a 15.6-inch touchscreen, heated and massaging front seats, and Level 2 driver assistance via Navigate on Autopilot.

BYD responded by launching the 2027 Seal 06, offering even lower entry points. The plug-in hybrid version starts at roughly $14,700, while the full electric version begins at approximately $16,100. The electric Seal 06 utilizes an 800V architecture with battery capacities ranging from 52.9kWh to 64.3kWh, providing a CLTC range of up to 630km.
