Volkswagen and French‑Italian Logistics Push Decarbonisation of Urban Freight

Commercial vehicle buyers must decide between cargo‑focused work vans and passenger‑oriented transport vans. Work vans prioritize load capacity, durability and customisable interiors for artisans, couriers and small logistics firms, while passenger vans emphasize seating comfort and safety for school, tourist or corporate shuttles. Volkswagen addresses both markets with its ID. Buzz Cargo electric van, which combines high payload with advanced connectivity, and the new Transporter model that marks a shift toward next‑generation powertrains.

A separate study of urban construction logistics shows that material transport accounts for over 40 % of freight tonnage in the Île‑de‑France region, moving about 39 million tonnes in 2022 and generating roughly 235 000 tonnes of CO₂‑equivalent – 26.7 % of regional freight emissions. Road haulage supplies 82 % of the volume and creates 77 % of the emissions. Experts argue that merely swapping diesel trucks for low‑emission vehicles is insufficient; the priority must be reducing total tonnage and kilometres travelled, avoiding empty runs, consolidating loads and shifting heavy flows to rail or waterways. Measures such as re‑using existing buildings, recycling materials, local sourcing and establishing consolidation hubs are highlighted, with policy tools like binding modal‑shift targets and material‑traceability requirements suggested for Italian cities and beyond.
