Volkswagen and NXP partner for software-defined vehicle architecture
Volkswagen and NXP Semiconductors have entered into a strategic partnership to develop software-defined vehicles (SDV) using zone architecture. NXP will provide its S32K5 family of microcontrollers (MCUs) to serve as key components in this new framework.
The architecture, developed by RV Tech—a joint venture between Volkswagen and Rivian—aims to replace traditional domain architectures. Instead of using individual electronic control units (ECUs) for every function, the zone architecture consolidates multiple tasks into fewer, more efficient zone controllers. These MCUs will manage functions such as lighting, body, comfort, chassis, and safety systems, while high-performance central processors handle more intensive tasks like automated driving and infotainment.
Volkswagen plans to unveil its first vehicle utilizing this S32K5-based zone architecture in 2027. The partnership is part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to secure its semiconductor supply chain and engage directly with chip manufacturers to shape future automotive technologies.
