Volkswagen and Xpeng partnership faces low sales in China
Volkswagen’s strategic partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng is facing significant commercial challenges in China. The first joint product, the UNYX 08 electric SUV, has seen much lower sales than anticipated. Between its launch in April and August, the model averaged approximately 267 units sold per month, representing only about 7% of Volkswagen’s internal target of 3,622 monthly units.
Industry experts attribute this shortfall to issues with product positioning, distribution networks, and intense competition. While the collaboration was intended to provide Volkswagen with local technological expertise to compete with rapid domestic developments, the UNYX 08 has struggled to compete against more technologically advanced and sophisticated models from local rivals like Xiaomi and Zeekr.
The struggle in China is critical for the German automaker. While China once accounted for nearly half of the group’s profits, its contribution has dropped to approximately 10%. This decline has necessitated widespread restructuring within the company as it attempts to regain competitiveness in a market that has shifted toward high-tech local alternatives.
