Volkswagen expands electric vehicle presence in China
Volkswagen is seeing significant success in the Chinese electric vehicle market through its joint venture, FAW-Volkswagen. The brand Jetta, a sub-brand within the venture, recently launched the M6 electric sedan, which secured over 10,000 binding orders within just 19 hours of its release. The M6 is positioned as an affordable option, with prices starting at approximately 79,800 yuan (around €11,000), and offers driving ranges between 465 km and 555 km under the CLTC standard.
In addition to the Jetta M6, Volkswagen Anhui has launched the ID. UNYX 09, a luxury electric sedan featuring 5C fast-charging technology and a maximum range of 755 km. This model is priced between 179,900 and 249,900 yuan. While some recent collaborations, such as the ID. UNYX 08 developed with XPeng, have faced lower-than-expected sales, the company continues to invest heavily in local technology and autonomous driving.
Volkswagen has also secured a road test permit for Level 3 autonomous driving in Hefei, Anhui province. This move is part of a broader strategic goal to achieve L3 autonomous driving readiness in China by 2027, supported by its joint venture with Horizon Robotics, Carizon.
