Volkswagen ends production of Touareg SUV in 2026

Volkswagen AG confirmed that the Touareg, its premium SUV launched in 2002, will be discontinued after the 2026 model year with no fourth‑generation replacement. The decision follows consistently low sales – for example, the model sold only about 5,000 units per year in the United States after its 2018 withdrawal – and a strategic shift toward the company’s electric ID family and a streamlined model range.

The final edition, a V6‑TDI R‑Line priced at roughly €94,000 in Spain, highlights the vehicle’s upscale features such as laser‑etched door‑frame inscriptions, illuminated trim and a 15‑inch Innovision cockpit. Despite its technical highlights, the Touareg never found a clear market niche, being too expensive for typical Volkswagen buyers and lacking the cachet of rival premium SUVs.

The model’s heritage includes shared platforms with the first Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 and memorable marketing stunts, like a V10‑TDI pulling a Boeing 747. Volkswagen cites disappointing volumes, ambiguous positioning, and the need to allocate resources to electrification as reasons for the shutdown.
