Volkswagen faces crisis as Osnabrück plant shifts to defense production

Volkswagen is facing significant structural changes and a crisis that could lead to approximately 50,000 job cuts in Germany. In response to the instability, the Die Linke parliamentary group has proposed that the federal government place orders for 10,000 additional electric buses with VW by 2030 to secure jobs and support climate goals.

Separately, the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück is transitioning from automotive production to defense solutions. Following an agreement between VW, the state of Lower Saxony, and investor Aurelius Capital, the site is set to become a center for defense technology. Automotive production at the facility is scheduled to end in September 2026.

The new owners plan to partner with the Israeli defense company Rafael to manufacture components for air defense systems, such as the ‘Iron Dome’ technology. According to the works council, this transition is expected to save nearly 1,400 of the approximately 1,800 jobs currently at the Osnabrück site.
