Volkswagen faces EV battery recalls and Seat brand phase-out

Volkswagen is facing significant challenges with its electric vehicle lineup, specifically the ID. family. The company issued a global recall for approximately 94,000 electric vehicles, including the ID. 3, ID. 4, ID. 5, and ID. Buzz, as well as the Cupra Born. The recall, affecting production from June 2023 to August 2024, is due to battery modules that do not meet specifications, rooted in the cell chemistry of the high-voltage batteries.

Beyond battery issues, the ID. series has been criticized for software malfunctions and problematic touch-control interfaces. Volkswagen has reportedly invested roughly 14 billion euros into its software subsidiary, Cariad, despite reports that only a small fraction of its workforce was actively programming.

In a broader strategic shift, the Volkswagen Group is restructuring its brands. Internal documents indicate that the Seat brand will be phased out, as the company focuses on Cupra to lead its Spanish operations. While Seat's plants in Spain will continue to produce electric models for Skoda, VW, and Cupra, the Seat brand itself is expected to cease existence as a standalone entity due to the economic challenges of making electric mobility viable in its specific price segment.
