Volkswagen recalls 208,724 vehicles in U.S. over steering defect
Volkswagen is recalling 208,724 vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the steering system. The recall involves a right-side steering-rack mounting bolt that may corrode and break, potentially leading to a loss of steering control and increased crash risk.
The affected vehicles include approximately 85,713 Volkswagen Tiguan models (2018), 82,601 Volkswagen Atlas models (2018–2019), and 40,410 Audi Q3 crossovers (2019–2021). The issue stems from moisture entering the area, causing corrosion that can weaken the bolt until it snaps, which may cause the steering rack housing to fracture during low-speed maneuvers or parking.
Volkswagen dealers will replace the faulty bolts with a corrosion-resistant version at no cost to owners. As of the latest reports, no accidents or injuries related to this specific mechanical failure have been recorded in North America.
