Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors announce strategic chip partnership
Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors have entered into a strategic partnership to integrate NXP’s S32K5 family of microcontrollers (MCUs) into the automaker’s future software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture. This collaboration aims to implement zonal control across all Volkswagen brands and vehicle segments, reducing hardware complexity by consolidating multiple vehicle functions into fewer electronic control units (ECUs).
The S32K5 MCUs will serve as core processors within zonal controllers, managing data from sensors and controlling actuators for systems such as lighting, body, chassis, comfort, and safety. This architecture is being developed through RV Tech, a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian.
The first vehicle featuring this new zonal architecture is planned for release in 2027.
