Volkswagen Group developed high-performance superdiesel engines

Volkswagen Group developed a series of high-performance diesel engines, known as superdiesels, that featured large displacements and significant torque. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company prioritized TDI technology, utilizing these units as a demonstration of engineering capability in its most expensive models.

Under the leadership of Ferdinand Piëch, the group expanded its engine range to include advanced constructions used in brands such as Audi, Porsche, and Bentley. Notable high-performance engines included the 5.0 V10 TDI and the 6.0 V12 TDI, the latter of which offered 1000 Nm of torque. Later iterations, such as the 4.0 V8 TDI, incorporated 48V architecture and electric superchargers. The development of these engines began with earlier models like the 3.9-liter 4.0 V8 TDI used in the 2003 Audi A8 D3.
