Volkswagen Group overtakes Tesla in European EV market shift

The European electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing a significant shift driven by the availability of low-cost models. In 2025, the Volkswagen Group's annual sales volume surpassed Tesla, signaling a change in market leadership. Skoda, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, has seen significant success by focusing on affordable options.

This trend toward affordability is also visible in North Africa. In Morocco, the startup Neo Motors launched the ‘Dial-E’, a small battery-electric vehicle (BEV), in January 2026. As the country's first domestic EV manufacturer, Neo Motors leverages low pricing to drive the transition to electric mobility, moving the competition from environmental compliance toward price, technology, and development speed.
