Volkswagen and Audi recall 2.86 million vehicles over steering defect
Volkswagen Group has launched a massive global recall affecting approximately 2.86 million vehicles across its brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda. The recall is primarily due to a technical defect involving a fastening screw on the steering gear that is susceptible to corrosion, particularly when exposed to road salt and moisture over several years. If the screw corrodes and breaks, it could lead to a loss of steering control or sudden failure of steering assistance, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
The recall impacts several popular models. Volkswagen vehicles include the Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy, and Atlas, with roughly 2.16 million units affected. Audi models include the Q3, with approximately 696,547 units involved. Seat models Ateca and Tarraco are also included, while reports suggest over one million Skoda vehicles may be part of the broader campaign. In Germany alone, nearly one million vehicles are subject to the recall.
Volkswagen and Audi have characterized the action as a precautionary measure. No injuries or material damages have been reported in connection with this defect to date. Affected owners are advised to contact authorized dealers for a free inspection and replacement of the faulty screw with a more corrosion-resistant version, a process expected to take about one hour. In the United States, the recall is being handled through separate actions via the NHTSA.
