Volkswagen launches vehicle recycling hub in Zwickau
Volkswagen has inaugurated its first circular economy hub at the Zwickau plant in Germany, transitioning the facility from pure vehicle assembly to include large-scale vehicle dismantling. Following a nine-month conversion and an initial investment of approximately 8 million euros, the plant has begun processing used vehicles from brands including Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and Seat.
The project aims to dismantle 4,100 vehicles annually by 2027, with plans to scale capacity to 15,000 vehicles per year by 2030. While the initial phase focuses on recovering high-value components for the secondary market—such as engines, doors, and mirrors—the long-term goal includes recycling raw materials like plastics and metals to reduce dependence on foreign imports and meet EU recycling mandates.
Volkswagen intends to invest up to 90 million euros in this circular economy initiative, supported by 10.7 million euros in funding from the state of Saxony. The move is seen as a strategic effort to create new business fields and provide employment stability for the Zwickau workforce, which currently faces uncertainty regarding future vehicle production schedules.
