Volkswagen Group shifts strategy to fund electric vehicle transition

Volkswagen Group is undergoing significant structural and financial shifts as it navigates the transition to electric mobility. Porsche SE reported a net loss of 2.218 billion euros for the first half of 2026, primarily driven by massive write-downs of approximately 3 billion euros on its Volkswagen AG holdings and 200 million euros on Porsche AG shares. Despite these accounting losses, the company's adjusted operating profit remained stable at 949 million euros.

To fund its electric vehicle strategy, Volkswagen is reducing its stake in the profitable truck subsidiary Traton from 87.5 percent to 75 percent. This move aims to improve capital structure and attract new investors without relinquishing control. Additionally, Bentley is preparing to launch its first all-electric luxury SUV in 2026, a move expected to target the high-end market with estimated prices exceeding 200,000 US dollars.

The complex power dynamics within Volkswagen remain centered on its major shareholders: Porsche SE (holding 53.3 percent of voting rights), the state of Lower Saxony (20.0 percent), and Qatar Holding (17.0 percent).
