Volkswagen partners with Rivian in $5 billion software joint venture

Volkswagen AG is implementing a major strategic shift in its software development approach through a $5 billion joint venture with the US-based startup Rivian. This move follows significant challenges faced by Volkswagen’s internal software unit, Cariad, which has struggled with costly development and unreliable updates.

The partnership aims to implement a modern “software-defined vehicle” architecture. This includes a transition to a zone architecture, replacing the complex system of up to 100 individual control units with a few high-performance central computers. This structural change is intended to facilitate seamless over-the-air (OTA) updates, similar to the technology used by Tesla.

The first vehicle expected to utilize this new technical foundation is the VW ID. EVERY1, an entry-level model scheduled for market release in 2027. This shift represents an attempt to resolve long-standing technical issues and move away from the previous reliance on fragmented hardware and internal software struggles.
