Volkswagen shifts production as electric vehicle demand rises in Europe

Volkswagen is undergoing a significant production realignment in response to shifting consumer demand in Europe. In Germany, the company is now receiving more orders for electric vehicles (EVs) than for internal combustion engine models. This trend has forced a strategic shift in manufacturing: while the Wolfsburg plant is reducing its output of combustion vehicles to approximately 580,000 units, the company is implementing special shifts at its Emden and Zwickau plants to boost EV production, specifically for models like the ID. 7 and ID. 3 Neo.

This localized shift mirrors a broader trend across the European Union. Recent data from the ACEA indicates that in August, battery electric vehicles reached a 29.2% market share, surpassing the combined market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles, which fell to 24.3%.

In addition to production changes, Volkswagen continues to innovate in efficiency. The company recently unveiled the Mission Efficiency prototype, a four-seater electric coupé built on the MEB+ platform. The prototype features integrated photovoltaic panels on the roof and tailgate, capable of providing up to 30 kilometers of additional range per day depending on weather conditions. It also boasts a highly aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of 0.158.
