Volkswagen Osnabrück plant to pivot to defense production
Volkswagen has reached a preliminary agreement to sell its Osnabrück plant in Germany, marking a significant shift from automotive to defense manufacturing. The majority stake will be acquired by Aurelius Capital, an Israeli investment firm specializing in defense projects, while the state of Lower Saxony will hold a minority stake.
Automobile production at the facility, which currently produces models like the T-Roc Cabriolet, is scheduled to end in summer 2027. The site is intended to be transformed into a competency center for security and defense solutions. A key anchor project involves collaboration with the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to produce air defense components and systems for Germany and Europe.
This transition occurs amid a broader restructuring at Volkswagen, driven by high costs, intense competition, and a need for significant savings. The company is facing a period of intense reorganization that could impact up to 100,000 jobs globally by 2030. For the Osnabrück workforce of approximately 1,800 people, the defense pivot is viewed as a potential way to secure roughly 1,400 jobs.
